2000s

In the early 2000s the chapter was restarted. This was the result of growing racial tensions in Wooster and a call from Lydia Thompson for a task force to address and protect the rights of local residents. When the organization restarted, Emmanuel Stone became the president. During his tenure as president, Stone emphasized  building collaborations with community organizations, fundraising, and giving back to local students through scholarships. Additionally, he led an initiative for the scholarship fund to be endowed with the Wayne County Community Foundation. During his presidency, the chapter’s legal redress committee also strengthened and the chapter became active in the Ohio Conference of NAACP chapters again. 1

Golf Scramble 2003

In 2003, the chapter held its first annual golf scramble at Mohican Hills. The scramble was a fundraiser for the organization’s scholarship for African American students. By the end of the decade, in addition to the annual golf scramble, the NAACP Wooster-Orrville chapter also hosted a joint golf event with the Ohio Conference of NAACP at Clearview Golf Club–a Black owned and operated golf course. The event continued to generate funds for the chapter’s scholarship fund. 1

Unity Project 2004

In 2004, the NAACP played an active role in the Wooster Unity Project, serving as mentors to support initiatives related to home ownership and housing. Part of the organization’s long-term commitment to housing justice, The Wooster Unity Project was a collaborative effort aimed at fostering community development, promoting diversity, and addressing issues of racial and economic inequality within the city of Wooster. As mentors, the NAACP members likely provided guidance, resources, and support to individuals and families seeking assistance with home ownership and housing-related matters. 1
